The outcome from the spring’s massive Avengers Endgame has resulted in the rise of a new group of heroes- the Eternals in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios revealed its phase four of its highly expected lineup at the 2019 Comic-Con in San Diego, where Marvel also introduced to the general public the recent projects that feature the well-known Thor: Love and Vision and WondaVision, alongside the Eternals.
It is directed by a prominent filmmaker Chloe Zhao, who was behind The Rider, a 2018 thriller, before moving up to superhero fare. The Eternal focuses on powerful immortals who have lived for over 35,000 years on Earth.
Zhao stated that it’s about a team of powerful immortals, where we discover what being a human means, through their journey.
The Eternals became a talking point last year when reports came in about Angelina Jolie joining the cast and this has been confirmed by Marvel at the Comic-Con that she will be playing the role of Thena. Jolie has also indicated that she has started training for The Eternals, even with her iconic action movie background.
Jolie demonstrated that she knew what it meant being in Eternals, a part of MCU and a member of the family. So she would be working 10 times harder. She said the script has been read and the task ahead is clear. She knows what people expect from her, so she’d be working extra hard.
She is joined by a cast where Kumail Nanjiani plays Kingo, Richard Madden, takes on the role of Icarus, Lauren Ridloff (who made history, becoming the first deaf superhero at MCU) stars as Makkari, Lia McHugh plays Sprite, Salma Hayek is Ajak, Brian Tyree Henry stars as Phastos and Don Lee takes on the role of Gilgamesh.
Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios introduced the movie as “Complete Jack Kirby” in recognition of the prolific comic book writer who created the Eternals in the 1970s. The comic book’s mythology has provided the knowledge we have about the movie’s plot. The Eternals were created by the Celestials, to safeguard the earth from Deviants, their evil counterparts.
Although the Eternals is not the next movie Marvel will be releasing, Black Widow will be reaching the theaters next May and the Eternal should be released by November 2020.
